What Teams Miss in Formative Testing

HF & Usability人因与可用性

Formative usability testing is not just a rehearsal for validation. It is the place where teams can still learn quickly, change the design, and reduce the risk of late discovery.

Formative studies should create design momentum

The biggest missed opportunity is testing only the obvious task flow. Real users bring partial knowledge, habits from adjacent devices, time pressure, and assumptions about what the product should do next.

Another blind spot is treating every finding as a training issue. When several users hesitate, search, reread, or recover from the same mistake, the interface, labeling, or physical affordance may be asking too much of them.

Good formative work creates a clear chain from observation to root cause to design action. That chain is what makes later validation more focused and defensible.

  • Recruit users who reflect actual experience levels, not only ideal users
  • Probe hesitation and recovery behavior, not just task success
  • Record why a use error happened before deciding how to fix it
  • Retest high-risk design changes before locking the validation plan
